The Reverend Jane Walden is to leave us for pastures new
Many congratulations to the Reverend Jane Walden on her appointment as Priest-in-Charge of St George's Brockworth. This is really good news for the people of Brockworth, although sad for us that she will be leaving us. Her licensing in Brockworth is to take place on Friday 4 May 2012 at 7.00pm and Jane will formally take her leave of us in April.

A PASTORAL LETTER FROM BISHOP MICHAEL
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
At this New Year I greet you and wish you and all within our diocesan family a year in which, with all the challenges that face our society, we shall richly experience God’s blessing on our world and on our lives. Today, on this First Sunday of Epiphany, Christians celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. St Mark, in his gospel, describes the event very briefly, but there is no doubt that it was of great significance for Jesus, certainly a moment when his vocation clarified. Perhaps it was the moment when there was a leap in his understanding of who he was.
This month we welcome the return of distinguished musicians from Bristol, the soprano Charlotte Newstead and pianist John Marsh. Michael and I are particularly delighted since we have known Lottie for many years; she was a good friend to our younger daughter at University and sang Vivaldi at her wedding. We are looking forward to what we are sure will be a varied and entertaining programme, which will include opera arias by Handel, French chanson by Faure and Berlioz, and a concert aria by Mozart. What a treat!
If you’ve seen the film The Iron Lady, you’ll almost certainly appreciate why Meryl Streep seems set to be nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar) for the seventeenth time for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. Whatever you may think of the film as a whole, it’s a quite astonishing performance on her part. On two previous occasions Meryl Streep actually won the award for best actress. It would be amazing if she were to win it for a third time.
Many thanks to everyone who came to the 11.00am service on New Year’s Day. In the event we were amazed at the very large numbers of people who came. It was a wonderfully celebratory occasion enhanced by the drinks and nibbles afterwards. Many thanks to the members of the Hospitality Committee and all those who brought food to share.
Our Lord’s response to the request from his disciples “Teach us how to pray” was the Lord’s Prayer. This was also the framework of last month’s article “What to pray for”, and it is the starting point and finishing point for “How to Pray”. But such a succinct prayer cannot be the whole story unless a great deal is read into the individual phrases.

Womens World Day of Prayer
This year the “Women’s World Day of Prayer” will be hosted for the first time at St. Mary’s Church, Woodchester. It is to be held on 2nd March, the first Friday in the month and commencing at 2 p.m.
Have you ever told your faith story or Christian journey to anyone? Would you like the opportunity to do so? Each month I will be looking for someone to come forward and tell me their story so that it can be published in our Parish Magazine. I believe that this will be an extremely valuable experience for both the storyteller and myself but also to our many readers.
